KUCHING, July 30: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is scheduled to officiate the opening of the long-awaited Sungai Bintangor Bridge at Jalan Ajibah Abol on Aug 5.

Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) director Dr Cassidy Morris conducted a site visit to the project on Monday (July 28) to evaluate its progress ahead of the official launch.

Poised to become a new landmark in Kuching City’s infrastructure landscape, the bridge is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and enhance connectivity between the city centre and its surrounding areas.

In a statement shared on its official social media platform, JKR Sarawak noted that the visit provided a valuable opportunity to assess the project’s readiness in terms of technical works, logistics, and multi-agency coordination in preparation for the ceremony.

The Sungai Bintangor Bridge, with a contract value of RM50.6 million, faced significant delays since construction began in December 2019.

The setbacks were attributed to several factors, including disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and complications related to the relocation of utility infrastructure.

Designed as an architectural icon, the bridge features a central tower supported by three massive columns and is complemented by the adjacent Sungai Bintangor waterfront.

The structure spans 108.5 metres across Sungai Bintangor and includes a four-lane dual carriageway.

Together, they are expected to become a new attraction in Kuching, offering visitors a gateway to experience the rich heritage and traditional lifestyle of the surrounding Malay villages.

The scope of works also involves upgrading and widening the existing two-lane single carriageway along Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol, from the Divisional Mosque to the Jalan Hj Mataim junction.

Initially slated for completion in April 2024, the project’s completion date was later revised to April 2025. However, with the final works completed, the bridge will be officially ready by Aug 2, marking the end of a long journey toward realising this much-anticipated development. — DayakDaily
